What does COVID-19 stand for?

In COVID-19,, "CO" stand for "corona", "VI" for "virus" and "D" for "disease".  Formerly, this disease was referred to as "2019 novel coronavirus" or "2019-n-CoV".  There are many types of human coronaviruses including some that commonly cause mild upper-respiratory tract illnesses.

Where did COVID-19 originate?

COVID-19 originated in Wuhan, China.

How does COVID-19 spread?

The virus that causes COVID-19 probably emerged from an animal source, but now it seems to be spreading from person to person.  It's important to note that person-to-person   spread can happen on a continuum.  some diseases are highly contagious (like measles), while other diseases are less so.  At this time, it's unclear how easily or sustainably the virus that causes COVID-19  is spreading between people.   

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

Patients with COVID-19 have had mild to severe respiratory illness with symptoms of fever, cough and shortness of breath.

Things to remember:

DO:

Wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds, with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub.

Cover your nose and mouth with a disposable tissue or flexed elbow when you cough or sneeze.

Keep at least 6 feet apart from individuals.

Stay home and self-isolate from others in the household if you feel unwell.


DON'T:

Touch your eyes, nose, mouth if your hands are not clean.
